Building free of bird perch, and why it matters
Birds are an important part of our ecosystem. A creature of delicate beauty and symbol of freedom.
However.. when allowed to nest inside, the humble bird can cause significant damage and unwanted mess! Bird droppings have a high uric acid content which will penetrate through most surfaces over time, causing rusting and damage to paint work. This is extremely annoying after the investment of a new shed to keep your valuables safe and sound! Bird poop on your work bench, your tractor seat, your jacket and your tools is totally unacceptable in our book.
Bird droppings are also a real health hazard. Salmonellosis is just one well known nasty illness that is caused by contact with bird faeces. There are, in fact, over 60 different types of illness that are known to spread to persons by contact with bird droppings.
For a bird that is seeking shelter and a nesting place, a large shed is the perfect place to keep safe and warm. Even if fully enclosed, birds will enter when the doors are left open and smaller birds will crawl in through extremely small openings once they learn that there are nesting spots up high in the roof framing. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to keep them out once they are established. There are various types of flashings and netting available, however mostly this becomes a costly exercise with minimal success.
The best solution is to remove all bird perch opportunity in the roof framing. Conventional shed designs use open framing members, have gaps above the rafters and diagonal braces which are an open invitation for birds to nest and perch and make themselves at home. The FORT BUILDINGS structure is specifically designed to actually take away these troublesome bird perching nooks and crannies. Structural members are an enclosed box section beam and constructed in a way which removes roosting spots. This gives you a cleaner, healthier environment in your work space and prevents mess and droppings on your gear.
