The 9 key points to make your shed project a success!

  1. Choose your site and orientation carefully so doors and opening side is best protected from the elements. Access, turning circles, levels and daylight angles all need to be taken into account. Read more here: Finding a good shed site

  2. Design for your property. All sheds NZ wide, should be designed specifically for your location and local conditions. This includes consideration for soil type, coastal conditions, snow loading, earthquake zones, wind loading and topography.

  3. Consent requirements. This is a legal requirements for most types of sheds NZ wide. Our design team oversees all aspects of consenting and ensures you are compliant. Its a good idea to get an understanding of consent requirements before you start the journey. Some sheds may not need a consent at all, find out more here: Will I need building consent?

  4. Cost. Ensure you have a realistic and accurate budget and understand every cost related to your project. Be aware that shed suppliers may not cover every cost associated with the project, Sheds NZ wide mostly have costs such as site works, electrical, geotechnical engineering and council fees that need to be allowed for. Talk to a Fort Buildings project manager about the best process for your project.

  5. Layout. Think about the best layout so work flow is best suited to your operation. Bays can be fully enclosed, partly or fully open.

  6. Concrete floor. This can be in the full floor area or just part of the area. The floor finish and thickness depends on loadings and useage of your shed.

  7. Clear span rafters remove the need for internal supports or poles and is a great feature for all types of sheds NZ wide. This gives operators unimpeded access and means implements or machines can be parked closer together. This helps to maximise your investment but increasing useable space inside the shed. With spans up to 30m available, this is our thing

  8. Height. Make sure you are thinking ahead to cover machines and equipment which may be stored in future. Items such as campervans, horse trucks, for large implements, trucks or tractors may need higher doors than expected.

  9. Deal with professionals. There are many pitfalls along the way which an experienced shed builder can help you avoid. Fort Buildings are trusted NZ design and build specialists for all types of buildings and sheds NZ wide
